The Existing Building

Sketch View of the revitalized Warehouse from the Strand.
Revitalised, it would give an iconic presence and unique address to the Swansea Print Workshop. It would also provide a facility that is well-matched to its building: an enduring and intricately layered craft housed in an enduring and intricately layered building.

Vision

“Swansea Print Workshop has a vision for the Kings Lane development which has been informed by nine years of continuous operation as a public access print workshop. This vision has been tempered by the feasibility process over the last 18 months, preceded by two years of preparation. The consultation process has provided a focus for members, staff and associates, and a forum for debate about our future, the risks and the challenges, but most of all the opportunities. Overall it has been a very positive experience for the organisation, not least in that it provided an outlet and direction for the frustrations arising out of the restrictions of our present premises. It has also reinforced and extended our links with other workshops and the visits have been invaluable in helping us to make decisions and looking at options for our own project.

We are under no illusion about the nature of the task ahead. Nevertheless we are committed to this project as a convergence of aspirations for the cultural life of Swansea and South Wales which provides the opportunity for a purpose designed facility, within what we believe will be an iconic building with first class architectural credentials. The project will have a unique profile in Wales as a coherent centre of advocacy for all things print with a wide range of first class facilities under one roof. We believe this convergence will provide support for an established, proven and vigorous artistic community to flourish in Swansea and provide much enhanced opportunities for public involvement as well as making a valuable contribution to the economy of the region.”

This will bring together in one building all the facilities necessary to support the training and continued professional development of an established, proven and vigorous artistic community and encourage it to flourish.

As a Print Centre it will provide a dedicated shop window for printmakers in Wales and create a centre of cultural interest for Swansea. On this scale it will be a unique, purpose designed facility in Wales.

As a hub of printmaking activity and a centre of excellence it will provide a concentration of resources, where the experience and expertise of artists working in the region can be fully exploited for the benefit of all sections of the community.

As such it will be a focus for all aspects of professional activity providing

  • A first class production facility with a high level of technical support
  • A centre of expertise for the display and marketing of prints
  • A networking centre for consolidating and reinforcing our links with other artistic communities, both nationally and internationally
  • A lively cultural centre with changing exhibitions promoting local and international practitioners

Additionally Swansea will have an iconic building with first class architectural credentials which demonstrates a convergence of aspirations for Swansea Print Workshop and Swansea’s ambitious and timely programme of regeneration in this run down area of the city.
